Daily update 23rd April 2020

Hi Everyone!

Well I cannot believe it’s nearly the end of another week at school! I would like to congratulate you all... I’ve been very impressed with the way many of you are pulling together and supporting one another, albeit remotely. You have all been so thoughtful and have tried to find ways to help out where you can. I am very proud to be a part of the Weyfield community – well done!

Today I have included details of a story competition for KS2 and 3 children. Guildford Book Festival has teamed up with Surrey Life Magazine to launch a Short Story Competition for children.
Each entry must be an original story and of no more than 500 words in length. The story can be about just about anything – time-travel, space, animals, food – the list is endless. I know we have so many children with fantastic imaginations and I’d love us to have as many entries as possible. Your story could even include some of your recent experiences from the lockdown.
Entries must be submitted online at surreylife.co.uk by August 31, 2020. Even though that seems like a long way off, remember it took JK Rowling 10 years to have her first Harry Potter book published.
There are two age categories; Key Stage 2 (7-11 years) and Key Stage 3 (11-14 years) and entries will be judged on their originality and not grammar, punctuation or spelling.
The judging panel will include Surrey Life editor Rebecca Younger the children’s authors MG Leonard and Sam Sedgman. The winners of each category will have their story published on the pages of the Surrey Life magazine and read out on BBC Radio Surrey. They will also receive a bundle of children’s books. How exciting!
The authors of all the shortlisted entries will also be invited with their families to meet MG Leonard and Sam Sedgman at their festival event on Friday 9 October at the Electric Theatre.

Well there’s something to keep some of you occupied. Fire up those imaginations and remember to sketch out your story in a plan so you can think about how the details link throughout. Maybe even start with a flashback or a piece of action. Wishing all of you who’d like to enter the very best of luck and you can always run your ideas past your teacher via Show My Homework.

Remember to stay safe everyone. We are looking forward to welcoming you back, but as yet have not heard when that might be so hold tight, follow the Government’s guidelines and keep being kind.
