By the time the children reach The Blue Planet they can read all the SET 1, 2 and 3 sounds quickly and can read at between 60-70 words per minute.

Children read Blue Storybooks they are reading fluently and are beginning to add their own expression to their reading. They can read words with more than one syllable quickly and can spell words using all the SET 1, 2 and 3 sounds. While reading Blue Storybooks the children also learn some of the more unusual sounds that sometimes come up in the English language such as the ‘f’ sound spelt ‘ph’ and the ‘n’ sound spelt ‘kn’.

If children are on track to achieve their end of year expectations they will begin reading Blue books in the second half of the Summer term of Year 1.
